The people who hurt us the most are often our loved ones. That is why spousal murder is not a new phenomenon. Since the beginning of time, humans have had a nature of violence and have acted that violence out against another, especially the ones we love the most, like family. This is not surprising. Everyone has had some personal experiences with family violence or has witnessed it at the expense of others. In U.S. society, when a husband or wife is killed, the first person that law enforcement turns to is the spouse. The married partner automatically becomes a suspect. It is also common to assume that the perpetrator, if the couple is not married, could be the boyfriend or girlfriend. A country that has a high rate (higher than the U.S) of intimate partner murders is Russia. According to Gorshkova and Shurygina (2003), in seven regions of Russia, a study was conducted on male-to-female violence using 1,000 women participants. The study showed that 41% of the women had been hit at least once by their husbands and 27% of those women had been beaten repeatedly. (Stickley, Kislitsyna, Timofeeva, Vagero, 448) This is the only percentages that could be obtained through a study, when the numbers are much larger than those because the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (2005) says that many partner violence crimes in Russia go unreported. This is due to the fact that, like the United States, family violence is viewed as a private matter. They do not want people getting involved in their personal relationships. Most people do not like to â€Å"air their dirty laundry†. According to Horne (1999) the reports that are received are usually dismissed due to bribery from the perpetrator to the law enforcement or disbelief. (488) This just shows that the number of women who are abused is much more than this statistic figures. It also just mentions abuse, but abuse can lead to death.
